Services Introduction

Everyone knows that children differ from adults. When it comes to dental care there is a vast difference between children and adults. And that is why Pediatric Dentistry is a dental specialty set apart by the dental profession.

Children have smaller bodies that are growing and that affects things like what kind of drugs can be used and how much can safely be given.

Children do not think and act like adults and they have to be managed differently in the dental office. Some must even be sedated for required dental work and that takes special skills and experience to do safely. Kids have habits like thumb-sucking that affect jaw growth. And children seem to be more accident prone. Broken jaws and teeth are common and the child’s growth and dental development are major considerations in treatment. Handicapped and medically compromised children present a special challenge.

Children’s jaws are growing and that limits the use of some dental technologies like implants for adults but it permits greater use of orthopedic devices to shape the jaws to give a more pleasing appearance.

Children’s teeth are developing and exfoliating and erupting. Therefore, treatment timing is a factor. Some roots are forming while others are being lost and this limits use of root canal therapies like those done on adults. Other ways of treating infections are required. Extra teeth may form and some teeth may be missing or erupting in the wrong place. Eruption guidance to optimize the final position of permanent teeth is very important for children.

About one in four children are prone to cavities. Identifying children early who are at high risk for cavities and teaching families to prevent them can save tens of thousands of dollars in a lifetime and promote better overall health. Fixing cavities in deciduous teeth is often done differently than in permanent teeth and must take into account subsequent tooth loss and different size and shape of the teeth.
